| Venue: | Institute of Physics, London |
| Organised by: | Higher Education Group of the Institute of Physics |
| Sponsored by: | The Polymer Physics Group and the Biological Physics Group of the Institute of Physics |
This meeting presents an opportunity to think afresh about how and what we teach our students about the condensed state of matter. Research into Condensed Matter Physics is now very much broader than a study of the behaviour of electrons in a periodic potential or an analysis of the spectrum of lattice vibrations in a crystal. It now encompasses the behaviour of rubbers and polymers, the physics of biological systems, the behaviour of molecular motors and the behaviour of disordered systems more generally. Very few of these exciting and fascinating topics have yet reached the conventional undergraduate curriculum and the time has surely come to ask if we can revitalise our undergraduate teaching of the condensed state of matter by incorporating some of these more recent developments into our undergraduate teaching of Condensed Matter Physics and Statistical Physics and also into our laboratory work.
In this meeting, a group of speakers who are experts in a number of different parts of these newer areas of what is now known as Soft Condensed Matter Physics, will give an overview, for non experts, of what they see as being exciting candidates for inclusion into a standard undergraduate teaching programme. They will also discuss their own work and experiences in incorporating the material into the undergraduate teaching within their own Physics Departments.
