The Tribology Group

The Group was formed in 1980 to provide a forum for the discussion of current developments in fundamental aspects of interacting surfaces.

Tribology, which broadly covers the field of friction, wear and lubrication of surfaces in relative motion, is an interdisciplinary subject drawing on knowledge from the fields of physics, chemistry, metallurgy and engineering. Because it is a multidisciplinary subject, the Group maintains close contacts with other professional bodies to ensure as wide a coverage as possible of the tribological field, whilst emphasising the fundamental physics of the processes involved.

The Group organizes three or four meetings in each year covering a variety of topics. Future meetings include:

  • Biotribology, 18 October 2006, Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London

The pages for the Group are currently being transferred to the new Institute of Physics website. Until this process is complete the original pages for the Group can be accessed here.
